A baby monitor for two rooms: what 'supports 4 cameras' leaves out

A listing that says "expandable to 4 cameras" is telling you how many cameras pair with the parent unit. It is not telling you whether you can see two rooms at once, or hear them both. Those are separate features. Check three things: split screen, how the sound is handled, and whether the second camera is in the box.

The sound problem
Showing two pictures side by side is the easy part. Sound is harder. Infant Optics puts it plainly on its split-screen model's page: most split-screen monitors can only play one camera's audio at a time, swapping every 15 seconds, which leaves gaps. That matches the Babysense listing, which describes a 15 second scan. Infant Optics sells a separate model, the DXR-8 PRO SS, that it says plays both rooms at once. That model is not one of our picks. We mention it because its page explains the limit so clearly.
What this means in practice: with a scan-mode monitor, you may hear a cry from the second room a few seconds late. If one child is a newborn and the other a sturdy toddler, set the audio focus on the newborn's room and use the picture for the toddler.
